We are really pleased to announce that we are taking part in the training course organized under the framework of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), i.e. the first multilateral disarmament treaty banning the development, production and stockpiling of an entire category of weapons of mass destruction.
It started today, Friday 9th November, in Beirut, Lebanon, and it will last 2 days.
With the purpose of strengthening the maintenance of international peace and security and to protect the international community from biological threats, each state member of BWC can benefit from the organization of a number of training courses which aim to support collective efforts and raining awareness on the importance of the topic.
In the capacity of European Union Expert for Italy, Prof. Gismondo – CLIMVIB Director – has been invited to facilitate the training course, which is focused on the following subjects:
- capacity-building on laboratory detection and surveillance capabilities of bioagents
- biorisk management (biosafety and biosecurity)
- emergency response to biological incidents
These topics were considered as priorities for the country involved, in order to improve its national capacity to effectively implement the BWC at national level.
We are extremely grateful for being invited to attend this event and to have the possibility to assist Lebanon in such important task, not only for the security of his country but also for the entire international community.
The training course is co-organized by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) and the Lebanese Armed Forces.
